The Homann’s African Heritage began in the blossoming settlement of the Cape in 1820. A mix of German, Scottish, Irish & English, generations of Homanns lived and farmed sheep in the Karoo of South Africa and the family name is still there today. But our ancestors moved north, eventually planting roots in the unchartered territories beyond the Limpopo River building a farm and life amongst the granite kopjes of what is today Zimbabwe.
These many years have ingrained in us a deep love & respect for diverse people of Africa and their wilderness and wild landscapes. We believe that a community based, sustainable wildlife economy through tourism is essential to the long term viability and stability of these people and places that are unique to this world.
It was here in 1972, that Mark was born and after 12 years of boarding school in wildlife areas of Zimbabwe, in 1992 Mark went directly into the guiding industry in Hwange National Park as a leaner guide. In 1994, after extensive practical examinations, Mark qualified for the coveted Zimbabwean Professional Guide’s license and he has been lead safaris across Africa ever since.
“When I met Maria in 2002, she was working in New York City as fashion designer Donna Karan’s chief of staff. While working with Donna Karan and as an assistant to actor/writer/director Chazz Palminteri, Maria garnered a wealth of experience in planning for and meeting the professional and personal needs of many successful and creative people. This wealth of knowledge has given her the background to successfully plan for others as well as multi-task ensuring all her clients’ needs are met.
After a whirlwind of long distance romance, we married on Palm Island on the Zambezi River above Victoria Falls in 2003. Maria moved to Zimbabwe to live in the bush with me at Pamushana where I was managing the guiding program. Her thirst for adventure was a good fit for Africa where she spent her days learning, living and helping with The Malilangwe Trust Community's ambitious program to feed 30 thousands school children every day."
Today, we combine our personal love of Africa with our extensive professional knowledge and experience, personally seeing to it that the wishes and details of our guests are met and exceeded every single day. Mark spends over 80 days each year on safari with our guests and Maria travels to revisit existing properties and to explore new products and experiences. We regularly travel on safari with our two children allowing us valuable insights into the unique aspects that make family safaris treasured memories.
We continue to do what we love, running and guiding safaris in Southern and East Africa. Our passions are found in Africa and in its wild places and her people. We would love to personally design your safari through the African bush and share with you the many magical places that have enriched our lives.
Homann's Africa is a family business and our daughter, Alexandra is doing her first internship in Africa this summer. You can see both Alexandra and our son Max featured in the video below having been on their first safaris at the age of 2 & 4.
We believe that our shared love of Africa and its people, coupled with our personal passions and professional strengths, allows us to collaborate to create unparalleled custom safari experiences. Together with our long time partners in Africa we ensure that every exquisite detail of your Homann’s Africa adventure is perfect, from the moment your feet touch the African soil until your last night under an African sky.
